TEDxYoungstown – Josh Allan Dykstra
Josh Allan Dykstra will be speaking at TEDxYoungstown this September at DeYor Performing Arts Center to share advice and ideas to the audience in hopes to start a work revolution.
The South Dakota native’s first career was as a musician, during which he worked many other jobs. Some of the “random and strange” jobs Dykstra worked were good and bad, he said, which led him to the realization that those experiences, whether good or bad, dictated the quality of his life. Now, a self-proclaimed “work revolutionary” and CEO of Strengthscope U.S., Dykstra strives to make people’s work environment less “meh” and more energy driven.
“The best way to improve our lives is to improve the way we work,” he says.
According to Deloitte, 87% of people are not passionate about their work. With most of us working upward of 100,000 hours in our lifetime, we should be able to love what we do, Dykstra says. A lot of people think that work should be painful and tiresome, not something that should be energizing and life-giving. It is Dykstra’s hope that he can turn around that point of view at his TEDx presentation on Sept. 22.
Dykstra says he is always trying to find ways to spread this message because he believes it is possible for everyone to love what they do. He wants to create a sort of work revolution where people get energized just by going to work. In order to accomplish this, Dykstra says he needs the audience to figure out what makes them tired and what makes them energized throughout the day. Actually paying attention to your “energy footprint” can be a great place to start this change in your workday.
According to Dykstra, inspired people deliver more output than people who are not motivated at work. This causes companies to spend twice as much in payroll to complete a job with nine people when it should really only take four. When companies employ people that hate their job, this causes a loss for the employee themselves, but also the company, he says.
At TEDxYoungstown, Dykstra will show the audience simple ways to achieve their own work revolution. In the end, he wants the workplace and organizations to give life to their employees, not suck the life out of them.
