Doing Business Globally; Route 224 Changes

From The Business Journal’s March issue, senior reporter Deanne Johnson explored resources for local companies that are looking to do business globally.

So how does a local business owner make connections and learn the rules of the road in a country where language and regulations can be a barrier? Some answers can be found through the Ohio Small Business Development Center Export Assistance Network at Youngstown State University.

Johnson also discussed resources available for local companies on an episode of “Byline Breakdown.”

Also from the March issue, George Nelson, deputy managing editor, took a look at the role federal and state funds can play in driving private investment; Guy D’Astolfo, entertainment editor, talked with Matt and Maggie Noble, new owners of the Tavern on the Square property in New Wilmington, Pa., who are deep into a project to renovate and enlarge the building and reopen the landmark restaurant; and Denise Dick, special projects manager, dug into YSU’s data mine class, where students work with companies that are trying to solve a problem using data.

From solving a problem to creating one, the owners of the Applewood Commons shopping center in Boardman told Nelson they had a tenant lined up for the spaces formerly occupied by Bed Bath & Beyond and Pier 1. That changed when Vince Fond Jr., Fond Property Group principal, shared details of a study related to a safety upgrade project being proposed for a nearly 2-mile stretch of U.S. Route 224. “They immediately terminated lease negotiations,” Fond said.

Here’s a look at those stories and other top stories this week from BusinessJournalDaily.com:
