AUSTINTOWN – At the start of 2020, wedding cake orders were normal for The Cake Baker. But once the pandemic hit in March, nearly all of the orders for weddings between April and June were canceled or postponed.
“Like everything else, weddings were put on hold,” says Alexis Weber of The Cake Baker. Weber has run the business from her Austintown home for 13 years.
Wedding receptions were permitted to resume in June, but by then many brides had rescheduled their wedding to 2021, says Weber.
Her first cake of the year was made for a July 11 wedding, that had been postponed from April.
A flurry of wedding cake orders followed that more than made up for the postponed orders. Business actually was twice that of 2019 for Weber.
The Cake Baker was able to reschedule every wedding cake order, adapting when necessary.
“I made more boxed cupcakes to keep servings individual, or I would make a faux cake for display and sheet cakes for the kitchen to serve,” Weber says.
